Zoanthid Care

Zoas tend to be quite a hardy coral that can tolerate a wide range of water quality.

Zoanthids are a soft coral found on coral reefs all over the world. Unlike sps and lps corals they do not use the calcium and alklinity in the water to grow. They do not need target feeding and their requirement for light and flow is relativley low.

Zoas add a great deal of colour to a marine aquarium, this colour is enhanced by the type of light used. Blue light brings out the flourescent colours in the heads and lashes. The colours come from a type of photosynthesising algea that lives inside the polyps called zooxanthellae. Offering ideal conditions for zoas encourages the development of zooxanthellae algae and as a result the polyps are brighter and more defined.

For advise on placement please see acclimatisation.

In my experience I have found that using good quality salt in water changes is very important. I learnt this the hard way! If you skimp on salt, you will have issues relating to water quality down the line. I can't endorse any salt brand but as far as salt goes searching 'cheapest first' is not the best plan.
